Sergeant Bartow R. Theall
Bartow R. Theall was born in 1921 to Frank and Ruth Theall. He was the youngest of four siblings, brother Duane, sister Gertrude, and sister Frances. He lived in Palmyra, Pennsylvania and was married to Harriet Seiler in 1943. Shortly afterword, he shipped out to Britain, where he underwent more training for the impending action fighting the Germans. As part of the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment, he died during Operation Overlord, the invasion of France. His gallantry earned him a Purple Heart and a Silver Star, high commendations for a deserving soldier. His sacrifice in the name of freedom will never be forgotten, and his memory will always be cherished.
I personally enjoyed exploring Sergeant Theall's life because I wanted to showcase one of America's heroes during World War II. Sergeant Theall had been largely unrecognized for his gallantry and sacrifice during the attacks against Nazi-controlled France, and I wished to shed light on his actions. I also found researching his unit history interesting and tracking his movements from his time in paratroop training to his drop over Normandy provided me with additional insight into the life of a WWII paratroop soldier. I found that this project broadened my knowledge of World War II and additional insight into more obscure aspects of the war.
